Dirty Filthy Love Story: an O.C.D. Experience
I recently had the pleasure of heading to some Los Angeles theatre to see one of my best friends, Burl Moseley, tear it up on stage as he always does, however this time without any warning I was sitting in a space where both professional organization and theatre combined. I was not prepared, at all, for the show I was about to see.

As the show began I wondered why it didn’t cross Burl’s mind to tell me that his show, that he was working on for months, had to do with a secret hoarder (Jennifer Pollono) who was battling with some serious issues. Not only was she a closet case, but her situation was affecting my dear friend Burl’s character selling of his house. Burl hires (Joshua Bitton) to come in and “clean up” like an organizer would do, but unlike most organizational consultants employed by the O.C.D. Experience Joshua’s character is more of the homeless type who has the IQ of a hamster on a wheel. Needless to say I was torn…do I sit back and enjoy a piece of theatre as intended or put on my Organize & Create Discipline hat and get to work . I took a breath, and decided to watch it all play out and let Joshua do all the heavy lifting. As much as I wanted to help, clean up and talk this out with everyone, I was an audience member watching a show.
I was blown away…besides the well written, extremely well acted and beautifully designed set by David Mauer and Hazel Kuang’s the show represented much more than a hoarder on the edge of losing her life, finding love, searching for the lost, but a wake up call for everyone watching in the audience of how easy life can just fall apart.
We all take for granted the simplicity of life and how easy it really can be if we surround ourselves with things that aid us in becoming our best selves. The simplicity also makes us vulnerable to life when shit happens! We all at one point in our lives come face to face with a version of the devil. How you choose to battle the devil is up to you, but if you give up and surround yourself with an assortment of things to distract you from that battle, the devil wins and eventually you forget WHY you are surrounded by meaningless stuff!
I encourage anyone who is in the Los Angeles area who has in interest in organization, hoarders, relationships, or just loves GREAT THEATRE to get yourself to this show before closes again. It was extended because it was that good so don’t miss a chance to see organizational chaos at it’s best, relationships at their worst and life as true as it gets.
In the meantime, start picking up the pieces of your own life and get to the truth. What you find at the bottom of the pile will either be a floor that needs cleaning or that one thing you lost that you were dying to find.
